Top of the World is Laguna Beach's most famous viewpoint, sitting at 1,040 feet elevation in Alta Laguna Park. On clear days, the view extends from Catalina Island to the San Gabriel Mountains, with the entire coastline spread below.
Access
Drive up Park Avenue or Alta Laguna Boulevard to the small parking lot at the summit. The park is free and open sunrise to sunset. Limited parking (maybe 15 spaces) fills quickly on weekends.
Alternatively, hike up from multiple trailheads in the Laguna Coast Wilderness Park system, adding 2-5 miles depending on your starting point.
The View
From the overlook, you can see:
- The Pacific Ocean from Dana Point to Newport Beach
- Catalina Island (26 miles offshore, visible on clear days)
- San Clemente Island (further south, rare clear days only)
- The San Gabriel and San Bernardino mountains to the north/east
- Downtown Laguna Beach directly below to the west
- Saddleback Mountain (Santiago Peak) to the east
Connecting Trails
Top of the World serves as a hub for the Laguna Coast Wilderness Park trail system:
- West Ridge Trail — Descends toward Laguna Canyon
- Mathis Canyon Trail — Drops into the backcountry
- Alta Laguna Trail — Ridgeline connector to Aliso Peak
- Park Avenue trail — Direct descent into town
Most trails are fire roads (wide, unpaved). The terrain is coastal sage scrub with occasional oak woodland in canyon bottoms.
Best Times
Early morning for photography (front-lit coastline, minimal haze). Winter months have the clearest air. Sunset is dramatic but faces directly west into glare. Avoid midday in summer (no shade, temperatures can exceed 90F on the exposed ridge).
